Google will limit Gemini AI users on the free plan to its Flash Lite model starting October 9, removing access to the standard Flash and Pro models. The change also means customers paying $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus will soon lose access to Gemini Pro.

Free users can currently choose among Flash Lite, Flash and Pro. After the change, standard Flash will require an AI Plus subscription, while access to Gemini Pro and the advanced reasoning option called Deep Think will be restricted to Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers.

The shift narrows what users can access without paying, and it changes the value of Google’s lower-priced subscription: AI Plus will unlock standard Flash but no longer include Pro. Google says it will email subscribers to tell them when their Gemini Pro access ends.

Which Gemini models remain available

Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month, while Google AI Ultra costs $99.99 a month, according to The Verge. The publication reported that those subscriptions will be required for Gemini Pro and Deep Think after the changes.

That leaves free users with Flash Lite, and AI Plus customers with standard Flash but not Gemini Pro once the downgrade takes effect. The source did not specify when AI Plus subscribers will lose Pro access; Google says it will notify them by email.

There is still some flexibility in how users run the models. Google says people can select low, medium or high effort levels for each model. Higher effort settings, however, could use up a user’s Gemini limit faster, the company said.

That matters for people who rely on the free service for more demanding tasks: model access is changing, and choosing a higher effort level may affect how long their available usage lasts. The reported change does not remove all free access to Gemini, but it confines that access to Flash Lite.

Paid access shifts up the tiers

The subscription changes create a clearer divide between the available models. Standard Flash moves behind the $4.99 monthly AI Plus plan, while Gemini Pro and Deep Think sit behind the more expensive AI Pro and Ultra plans, priced at $19.99 and $99.99 a month respectively.

For existing AI Plus customers, the change is a downgrade in one specific respect: they are losing Gemini Pro. Google has not provided a date for that removal in the source report, so subscribers will have to rely on the email notification the company says it will send.

The Verge reported that the free-plan restriction starts October 9. From that date, free users will be limited to Flash Lite.
