For audiences, the documentary offers a final on-screen appearance by Bob Saget; for its filmmakers, it is also a project begun years before his death. Netflix will release Who is Martin Mull? on October 7, 2028, a film Saget co-directed and executive produced about the comedian, painter and musician.
The documentary will arrive more than four years after Saget died. A trailer released on October 7 shows him interviewing Mull, who died in June 2024 at age 80. Saget died at age 65 in 2022 after accidental head trauma caused by an unwitnessed fall while he was on a stand-up tour, according to the source report.
The footage gives viewers a glimpse of their exchange. “I don't know where to begin because, to me, you truly are a jack-of-all-trades,” Saget tells Mull in the trailer. Mull quickly replies, “Jerk-of-all-trades,” prompting Saget to laugh.
Saget started work on the documentary in 2018. After his death, co-director Neil Berkeley took over to complete it, according to the report. Berkeley said on Instagram: “I'm so, so grateful to have been asked... to help complete the work that Bob Saget started back in 2018.” He also thanked Netflix for helping guide the film to completion.
The release preserves work Saget began with Mull and gives the project a direct connection to its subject: the trailer features Saget conducting core interviews with him. The documentary will trace Mull’s career through footage and interviews, with contributions from people including Steve Martin, Tom Waits and David Alan Grier, according to Netflix’s official description.
That description presents the film as a story told by Mull and by friends who watched his career unfold. It also quotes Mull describing his life as “a hell of a ride.”
Saget was an executive producer alongside Kevin S. Bright, Morgan Neville and Caitrin Rogers. Sean Bradley, Tara Billik and Berkeley produced the film. Berkeley’s other work in Netflix’s October comedy documentary lineup includes a film about stand-up comedian Maria Bamford, which he co-directed with Judd Apatow.
Netflix plans to release four comedy documentaries in October. Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story is scheduled for October 23, while Apatow’s Norm: The Tale of Norm McDonald is set for October 16. The lineup also includes SCTV: The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of, due October 30 and starring Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy.
The Independent said it had contacted Netflix for more information. Who is Martin Mull? is scheduled for release on October 7, 2028.
