Prahlad Joshi Gets Additional Charge Of India’s Education Ministry
Has been assigned additional charge of India’s Education Ministry after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, keeping his other cabinet portfolios in place.

NEW DELHI — Prahlad Joshi has been given additional charge of India’s Ministry of Education after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, according to the government and biographical records of the minister. The move came on July 25, 2026, and places Joshi in one of the country’s most closely watched cabinet posts while he continues to hold his existing portfolios.
The change matters because education policy in India affects millions of students, teachers and families, and any handover in the ministry tends to draw attention quickly. It also comes at a sensitive moment for the government, with the portfolio now shifting to a senior figure who is already managing multiple responsibilities.
Prahlad Joshi and his current cabinet roles
Prahlad Venkatesh Joshi is serving as the 13th Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and the 10th Minister of New and Renewable Energy since 2024. He was previously the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, the Minister of Coal and the Minister of Mines from 2019 to 2024.
Joshi has been a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha since 2004, representing the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency. He was also the State President of Bharatiya Janata Party, Karnataka, from 2014 to 2016, and served on the panel of chairpersons of the Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2018.
Born on November 27, 1962, in Bijapur, Mysore State, India, Joshi is now 63. He first came to public notice through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-linked movement to hoist the Flag of India at the Idagah Maidan in Hubli, Karnataka, during 1992–1994.
Why the education brief matters now
Education is a politically sensitive ministry in India because decisions on schools, exams and administration can affect public trust fast. A change in charge, even an additional one, can signal an effort by the government to steady the ministry while keeping the cabinet structure intact.
In July 2026, Joshi was assigned the extra responsibility after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned over paper leaks and weak management of the testing agency, according to the biographical record cited for Joshi. That sequence has put the ministry back into the spotlight and raised attention on how the government will handle administrative continuity.
For families and students, the immediate impact is less about the title and more about stability. A ministry tied to examinations and school policy cannot afford long pauses, and the government’s choice suggests it wants a senior hand already inside the cabinet system to take over quickly.
Short handover. Big stakes.
Political weight in the appointment
Joshi’s appointment also reflects how the government manages senior portfolios among experienced ministers. He has spent years in Parliament and has held multiple Union posts, which gives him broad administrative experience as he takes on the education brief alongside his existing duties.
His Lok Sabha record is long. Joshi has been elected in the general elections of 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024, keeping the Dharwad seat across five contests. That continuity has made him one of the BJP’s more established parliamentary figures from Karnataka.
The education file now sits with a minister whose background stretches from party organisation to parliamentary work and central ministries. The government has not indicated any change to his other roles, meaning Joshi remains in charge of consumer affairs, food and public distribution, and new and renewable energy while also handling education.
The next question is how the ministry under Joshi will respond to the pressure around examinations and administration. The shift itself is already complete, and Joshi’s added charge took effect on July 25, 2026.
