Australian federal Labor MP Luke Gosling has been charged with two counts of assault over an incident involving Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly at a Thai festival in Darwin earlier this month. Police arrested the 54-year-old lawmaker this morning after investigating the matter last week.
The case now carries a potentially heavy penalty under Northern Territory law. Very heavy.
Charges after Darwin festival incident
The Northern Territory administrator’s office said the incident happened during the NT Thailand Grand Festival, a community event held in Darwin on July 18. NT Police have charged Gosling with two counts of assault on the administrator or judges.
In a brief statement after his arrest, Gosling said: “The Northern Territory Police have released a statem
His lawyer told the media that Gosling denies the charges and said there is a “real concern” about “politicisation”.
Why the case matters
David Connolly serves as the Crown’s representative in the Northern Territory, a vice-regal role equivalent to a state governor. That status is why the alleged offence is being treated under a specific provision of the NT Criminal Code.
According to the code, anyone found guilty of assaulting the NT administrator while “he is engaged in the discharge of his official functions” could face imprisonment for up to 14 years. The wording puts the alleged conduct in a sharply different category from an ordinary assault allegation.
For Labor, the charge places a federal MP under immediate legal and political pressure. For the territory’s administration, it raises questions about an alleged incident involving one of the NT’s highest officeholders at a public community event.
Police began investigating last week, and the arrest this morning brought the matter into the open. The next stage will be dealt with through the legal process, with Gosling now facing two assault charges tied to the same episode.
