Police have arrested the gunman accused of fatally shooting a 12-year-old boy outside a Bronx deli, after surveillance video captured the brief, chaotic moment gunfire tore through a crowded sidewalk. The footage, released by United Bodegas of America, shows children and seniors passing Wanda Deli on Elliot Place just before 5 p.m. on Sunday when a street fight suddenly turned deadly.
In the video, several people are seen trading blows in the roadway. Then a man standing on the sidewalk — wearing a black baseball cap, white T-shirt and black shorts — raises a handgun and fires into the melee. Panic follows instantly. People sprint in every direction. Inside the store, customers duck for cover as food items topple to the floor.
Three people were hit
Officers from the 44th Precinct responded after a 911 call and found the 12-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. A 34-year-old man had been shot in the left foot, and a 25-year-old man was struck in the buttocks. The child was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police identified him as Jacob F.
The footage is blunt. Shocking, even by New York standards.
It also shows how fast a crowded block can unravel. One second, a neighborhood street is busy with ordinary life. The next, people are running for cover while shots echo outside a deli door.
Released by a merchants group
United Bodegas of America released the video, adding to the public record as investigators moved ahead with the arrest. The organization represents bodega owners across the city, and its decision to share the clip drew attention to the risk faced by bystanders caught near street disputes that turn violent.
Gun violence in dense urban neighborhoods remains a global concern, from New York to other major cities where public spaces can become dangerous in seconds. This case stands out because the victim was 12, and because the attack unfolded in broad daylight in front of shoppers, children and older residents.
Authorities have not released additional details about the arrest. The video, though, leaves little room for doubt about the speed of the shooting. A crowded sidewalk. A raised gun. Then flight.
The boy was taken to Lincoln Hospital and died there after the shooting outside Wanda Deli at 104 Elliot Place.
