Two men armed with a replica gun, American-flagged bulletproof vest, and a toy police badge sent dozens of officers into a busy entertainment district near Sydney's sports stadiums on Monday evening.
The pair, aged 39 and 35, were detained around 5 p.m. after NSW Police received reports of someone brandishing a weapon at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. What followed was a visible show of force: tactical units and approximately 20 police vehicles descended on the precinct, cordoning off restaurants and shops as confused diners watched officers move through the area in riot gear.
The Scene Unfolds
One man circulated between dining venues wearing the bulletproof vest, with what appeared to be a firearm strapped to his chest. A witness eating nearby described the moment of uncertainty: she glimpsed the vest and gun-like object but couldn't immediately tell if the man was in costume or posing a genuine threat. "I've never seen anything like that happen in real life," she told local media. "It was terrifying."
Officers cornered the individuals outside a fast-food restaurant. The lockdown was brief. Within hours, police confirmed the weapon was counterfeit and posed no danger to the public.
What Police Recovered
Officers seized the replica firearm, the ballistic vest bearing a US flag, a fake police badge, black boots, and a cardboard box labeled "Hard Drugs"—adorned with smiley faces and stars in what appeared to be a deliberately theatrical or humorous presentation.
Both men were transported to Surry Hills Police Station for questioning. NSW Police statement stressed the incident resolved without ongoing risk, though the episode highlighted how props and costumes—even obviously fake ones—can trigger rapid emergency responses in crowded public spaces, especially when spotted amid crowds of ordinary shoppers at a venue spanning 11 hectares with cinemas, restaurants, bars and retail outlets adjacent to the Sydney Cricket Ground.
