India’s government has shut down speculation that Parliament’s monsoon session will be stretched beyond its scheduled end. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Wednesday there is no plan to extend the sitting or call a special session in August.
Rijiju told ANI there is “no proposal” to add more days to the session and no special sitting from August 16 to 18 to take up the Women’s Reservation Bill or the Delimitation Bill. The monsoon session began on July 20 and is due to end on August 13.
House friction continues
The clarification came as the session has been repeatedly adjourned amid sharp friction in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Opposition parties have pressed their demands around the presence of senior government leadership during proceedings, keeping the House locked in a familiar standoff.
That deadlock has left little room for business. Still, the government is not standing still. Sources said officials are likely to seek passage of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 before the session closes.
Bill still on the table
The proposed amendment would update the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, which governs how individuals, associations and companies in India receive and use foreign funds. The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, 2026.
Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah may reply to the debate or intervene if the bill comes up for discussion. One key change in the draft creates a designated authority to handle foreign contributions and assets of organisations whose FCRA registration is cancelled, surrendered or no longer valid.
Rijiju’s comments also came after a high-level meeting inside the Parliament complex. He met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, and senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi in his chamber for about 50 minutes, part of efforts to understand the opposition’s position on the Delimitation Bill.
For now, the calendar appears fixed. The House is set to run only until August 13, and any fresh move on the pending bills will have to wait for the next turn of the parliamentary wheel.
