Cowley said he felt his team handled the opening spell reasonably well. “We defended well in that opening period,” he said.
That spell did not last. Cowley pointed to a key chance for Jaden Williams that went just wide before Peterborough scored first, then tightened their grip on the match. From there, the away side could not recover before the interval.
He said the key problem came in the wide areas, where Peterborough’s wingers caused repeated trouble. Cowley added: “I didn't like the way we defended in wide areas and their two wingers – Owura obviously we know really well – were very good.”
Cowley points to defensive lapses
The Colchester manager was blunt about the goals his side conceded. “But we didn't get our distances right, we didn't get our footwork right, we didn't get the coverage behind right,” he said.
He added that his team failed to protect the spaces they were supposed to control in a back four. “The three players, the full-back, the wide player and the ballside six have a big responsibility to defend those spaces and we just didn't get that right unfortunately,” Cowley said.
He also criticised the way Colchester defended the moments leading up to the goals. On the first, he said, “we get no coverage on Jaden and Jaden gets beaten too easily.”
The second half brought some improvement, and Colchester finally got a reward for that lift when Ronnie Harvey scored with a long-range strike. It was a bright moment in an otherwise difficult evening.
Cowley said the match still carried value because of the experience it offered younger players. “It was a brilliant experience,” he said, while also stressing that his team had to put the defeat into context.
Peterborough, meanwhile, took the points with a performance that was efficient rather than flashy. They did enough early, then managed the rest. The live BBC update listed Peterborough United as position 2 with 3 points, a simple reflection of a clean start to their trophy campaign.
The standings will matter from here, but so will the detail Cowley kept returning to: a poor period between 25 and 45 minutes, the decision to rotate heavily, and the challenge of learning quickly from a night that was already gone by the time Harvey struck.
