PT NHM Deploys Integrated Wildfire Response to Safeguard Operations
PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) launches an integrated wildfire response system to ensure operational safety and environmental protection during dry season.

JAKARTA — PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (NHM) has launched an integrated wildfire response system to combat the heightened threat of forest and land fires during Indonesia’s current dry season. The strategy centers on proactive prevention and rapid deployment to minimize operational disruptions and ensure the safety of its workforce.
Mining operations in the region face unique challenges, including vast terrain, intense afternoon temperatures, and limited access to remote areas. These environmental factors can cause fire to spread with extreme speed, turning small blazes into large-scale incidents that threaten both industrial infrastructure and local ecosystem health.
A Structural Approach to Risk Management
HSE System Specialist at NHM, Andri Prasetyo, emphasizes that wildfire management requires a systemic approach rather than reactive firefighting. In an industrial setting, a fire is not merely a localized event but a catalyst for cascading risks, including reduced visibility due to smoke, safety hazards for personnel, and potential operational shutdowns.
“We cannot view forest and land fires as ordinary incidents. In the context of mining operations, the impacts are wide-reaching. We have prepared a structured response to address these challenges effectively,” stated Prasetyo.
By acting before a fire expands, the company aims to eliminate the dangers of delayed responses, which can cost valuable time when battling shifting winds and dry vegetation in volatile areas.
Prevention and Strategic Monitoring
The company’s mitigation strategy involves a dual approach of prevention and rapid suppression. NHM has established buffer zones and firebreaks in sectors bordering high-risk forest areas. Maintenance crews conduct routine clearing of dry vegetation and other flammable materials in critical zones to create natural barriers against fire spread.
Technological and ground-level monitoring serve as the frontline for early detection. NHM tracks hotspots and meteorologically sensitive conditions to identify potential ignition points before they become uncontrollable. This system is supported by pre-mapped access routes for emergency vehicles, designated water sources for firefighting, and enhanced patrol schedules during peak fire risk periods.
Operational Safety and Environmental Stewardship
For the mining industry, wildfire preparedness is intrinsically linked to operational continuity. Dense smoke interferes with transport corridors and field surveillance, complicating the daily workflow. By integrating environmental protection into its operational framework, NHM seeks to maintain safety standards while minimizing its ecological footprint.
This proactive stance extends to community engagement, with the company providing regular wildfire prevention education to both employees and nearby residents. As the dry season persists, NHM continues to emphasize that their commitment to a safe mining environment relies on the consistent application of these structured protocols rather than improvisation during emergencies.
