What to Test First on the iPhone 18 Pro: Its New Camera Aperture

Apple’s latest Pro phone gives users a new way to shape a photo before they press the shutter. The iPhone 18 Pro is now available, and its variable-aperture main camera is one of five features worth testing straight out of the box.

The upgrades also include new Photographic Styles, a smaller Dynamic Island and faster charging. But the camera offers the most hands-on change: its lens can physically adjust how much light reaches the sensor and how much of the background appears in focus.

Try the aperture settings side by side

The 48-megapixel main camera is the first iPhone camera to use a variable aperture. Six blades inside the lens open and close, much like those in a DSLR, giving users more control than a fixed opening allows.

The Camera app offers four settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4. Photograph the same subject at each setting and compare the results. Changes in light, image noise and background blur become easier to spot when the subject and framing stay the same.

At f/1.48, the lens lets in more light and produces stronger background blur. That setting can suit a portrait or another shot where the subject should stand apart from its surroundings. The narrower settings offer a way to see how the look changes as the aperture closes.

Small adjustments matter.

Apple’s new Photographic Styles add another option to try while taking pictures. Together with the adjustable aperture, they give users more control within the Camera app. The source material does not detail the individual styles, so the most direct test is to compare their effects on the same scene.

There are changes beyond photography. The Dynamic Island is smaller, while charging is faster than on the previous model, according to the source material. Those features are easy to check during setup: look at the display area around the front camera, then connect the phone to power.

For a quick camera test, keep the scene fixed and cycle through all four aperture choices. The widest setting is f/1.48.
