Google Workspace users can now open and edit Markdown files directly in Docs, removing a conversion step for teams working with AI-generated material. Google confirmed native support for .md files on October 5, with the feature rolling out to all Workspace customers.

The change means users can view formatted Markdown, including links and tables, instead of facing raw text or code. Availability is staggered, and some users may wait up to 15 days for the feature to appear in their accounts.

Markdown moves into everyday Workspace workflows

Markdown is a lightweight format for structuring text. Google describes it as a common language used by people and AI agents, which increasingly produce and process content in the format.

Until now, recipients of .md files often had to convert them into Google Docs to make them easier to read and edit. The new support removes that intermediate step: users can open a file in a rendered view and edit its contents directly in Docs.

For teams handling AI outputs, the practical impact is a shorter path from generated material to collaborative editing. Links and tables retain their intended structure, making information easier to scan than when the file appears as unformatted text.

The rollout is not limited to corporate accounts. Google says the feature is available to all Workspace customers, though it will not appear for everyone at the same time.

Update follows Gemini’s Markdown announcement

The Workspace change follows Google’s announcement in April 2026 that Gemini can generate Markdown. Together, the developments make it easier to take .md files produced by AI and continue working on them in Google’s productivity tools.

Google has not provided further details about editing beyond the ability to work with Markdown files directly in Docs. Users can check their accounts as the phased rollout proceeds.

Google said Markdown is a common language for people and AI agents.
