Chart: JournalArta Markets

Wall Street opened Thursday with a split tape: the Nasdaq slid 1.99% to 25,225.3 and the S&P 500 lost 0.95% to 7,615.65, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.11% to 53,412.2. Crude oil and gold rose together, the 10-year Treasury yield edged higher, and Bitcoin gave back ground.

The pullback in technology-heavy indexes follows a strong Wednesday, when the Dow jumped 3.03% and Brent crude fell sharply, as covered in our Wall Street close report. Thursday's early trade shows some of that move being tested.

Wall Street: tech lags, Dow holds up

The Nasdaq is the weakest of the three main US benchmarks. It is down 8.6% over the past month, though still up 8.53% year to date. The S&P 500 is down 2.6% over one month and up 11.25% for the year, with its 52-week high at 7,818.9.

The Dow is the outlier, rising 0.11% as the other two fell. Canada's S&P/TSX was little changed, down 0.06%, while Brazil's Bovespa gained 0.83%.

Single-stock moves from the latest daily data show how uneven the market has been. On Wednesday, 3M rose 9.55% to $193.95 and Home Depot gained 6.53% to $355.44. Booking Holdings added 9.83%. On the downside, Datadog fell 14.42% to $188.72, Marvell Technology lost 7.08% and Micron dropped 7% to $795.23. CVS Health slid 12.53% to $79.96.

Oil and gold both climb

Energy is back in focus. Brent crude is up 2.9% at $97.36 a barrel and WTI has gained 1.78% to $89.69. Oil rose after the US election as risks from the Iran war persist, according to our oil report. Vice President Vance said voters want an end to the war after Republican losses, as detailed in our political coverage.

Gold is up 1.81% at $4,131.33 an ounce and silver has added 1.54% to $53.09. Copper is nearly flat at $6.442 a pound, up 0.2%, and natural gas rose 0.37% to $2.97.

Rates, dollar and currencies

The US 10-year yield is at 4.91%, up from 4.89% at the previous close. The Dollar Index is at 101.64, up 0.08%. The euro is slightly softer at $1.121, down 0.22%, and sterling is at $1.346, down 0.08%. The dollar is steady against the yen at 158.29.

The Indonesian rupiah firmed 0.18% to 18,069.81 per dollar, on a day when Jakarta was one of the strongest markets in the region.

Europe and Asia set the backdrop

European stocks are higher in afternoon trading. The FTSE 100 is up 0.6% at 10,894.65, the DAX has gained 0.66% to 26,611.34 and the CAC 40 is up 1.13% at 8,270.62. The Euro STOXX 50 added 0.64%.

Asia finished mostly firmer. The IHSG rose 2.57% to 5,030.26 and the LQ45 gained 2.48%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 3.67% to 24,796.98, Australia's ASX 200 climbed 2.61% to 9,065.1, and India's Sensex rose 3.11%. Japan was the exception: the Nikkei 225 fell 1.79% to 61,077.9.

Crypto softens

Digital assets are lower. Bitcoin is down 1.92% at $78,887.3, Ethereum has fallen 2.51% to $2,362.08 and Solana is off 1.38% at $94.18.

What to watch next

Earnings remain a driver of single-stock moves. Airbnb reports after the close on Thursday, with an earnings-per-share estimate of $2.91. Arm Holdings is also scheduled to report on the day. On Friday, Charter Communications reports before the open, with an estimate of $9.24 a share.

Next week, Constellation Energy reports on Monday before the open, followed by The Trade Desk and Take-Two Interactive after the close. Applied Materials and Cisco are due on November 12.

Traders will also keep an eye on whether Brent holds near $97 and whether the Nasdaq can stabilise after a month of declines. The US 10-year yield and the dollar remain the other key gauges of risk appetite as the session develops.
