Prince Harry and Meghan are preparing to move their family back to the UK later this month, according to reports cited by BBC News. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to leave the United States for a private home outside London, with their children due to start school in Britain in September.
The move would mark a notable change for the family six years after Harry and Meghan stepped away from royal duties and rebuilt their lives in California. Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are enrolled at a British school, while the couple will keep their homes in Montecito, California, and Portugal, according to reports.
No return to royal duties
There is no plan for Harry or Meghan to resume life as working royals. Their official status is expected to remain unchanged, and they will continue as private individuals. The couple are not being offered any “half-in-half-out” arrangement, the reports said.
The King was told of the move on Sunday, and Prince William and Princess Catherine have also been informed. BBC News understands King Charles was unaware of the plan before last weekend, but welcomes the chance to see more of the Sussex family in a private, personal capacity.
Family ties and a quiet shift
The Sussexes and their children visited King Charles at his Highgrove home in July, though the move was not discussed then, BBC News said. That visit now looks like a separate moment from the relocation plan, not a signpost to it.
The family’s return comes after years of strained relations between Harry and the wider royal household, following the couple’s departure from the UK and royal work in early 2020. Their move to California had become the base for a new life, public projects and separate household arrangements. Now they are set for another reset. Quietly, but with real weight.
For the royals, the practical question is not whether Harry and Meghan are coming back into the fold. They are not. The immediate change is simpler and more personal: a family once based in California is preparing to live again on British soil, with school places secured and a private residence waiting outside London.
