Ukraine has given Britain access to a secret battlefield intelligence database that London says could help protect military bases and critical infrastructure from Russian spies. The deal was signed in Kyiv on Monday during Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s first visit to the Ukrainian capital.
Downing Street said Britain will be the first country outside Ukraine to receive access to the “Avengers” AI platform, which Kyiv has built from battlefield data gathered over more than four years of war with Russia. The system sorts and annotates millions of real-world observations on tanks, artillery, air defence systems, infantry, Shahed drones and reconnaissance UAVs.
Battlefield data from the front line
The database draws on footage and readings collected by thousands of cameras and sensors placed across the front line. That material is fed into the Avengers Lab, where it is used to train artificial intelligence models for automated targeting systems and other defence tools.
British officials described the handover as a “goldmine” of intelligence. The immediate focus is national security, with the Ministry of Defence expected to use the data to learn from Ukraine’s battlefield experience and develop AI-powered responses to threats at home.
British and Ukrainian officials say the work could also feed into wider civilian uses. One government view was that the platform may eventually help reshape systems far beyond defence, with references to air traffic control and train systems among the areas that could benefit.
Why London wants in
The UK is looking for new ways to protect bases from espionage and sabotage, and the deal gives it a rare look at how Ukraine has built AI tools in live combat conditions. For London, the attraction is plain: years of frontline data, tested against Russian armour, drones and electronic warfare, now available to British engineers and defence planners.
Kyiv, in turn, has offered to share lessons from that experience with allies beyond Britain. Officials said Ukraine could also help Australia and other partners develop drone technology, underlining how the war has become a laboratory for military innovation.
The agreement comes as cooperation between London and Kyiv deepens, something that has drawn sharp criticism from Moscow. Britain’s access to Ukraine’s data marks the first time any foreign government has been granted entry to the platform, a step that could shape how allies train AI systems for defence. The next phase will be watched closely in both capitals.
