For Beach Boys fans, the return to the stage brought a new concern: Mike Love appeared frail and remained seated throughout the performance. The band played its first public concert since July at Cincinnati’s PNC Pavilion on Saturday, with John Stamos telling the crowd Love had been facing health issues.

Stamos helped Love onto the stage and introduced him before the music began. The singer joined in on backing vocals at times, while other band members took over lead parts he usually sings.

Love’s condition has not been specified. The performance followed months of canceled shows and uncertainty around the band’s touring plans.

Mike Love’s Cincinnati appearance

The Beach Boys opened with “Do It Again,” a song Love usually leads. Guitarist Brian Eichenberger sang it instead. Christian Love, Mike’s son and longtime bandmate, handled “Surfin’ Safari,” another song traditionally sung by his father.

Members of the band traded lead vocals for the rest of the set. Love remained seated and contributed backing vocals at points. After the opening song, he thanked the audience, saying, “thank you for showing up.”

“He’s been going through some health issues. He’s had to cancel some shows. But he would not miss tonight,” Stamos told the audience. He said the band was there to support Love and give him as much love as they could.

The change was visible onstage. Love, who had previously handled lead vocals, took a more limited role while his bandmates carried the songs.

Tour cancellations and health update

The band had been off the road since July, when it paused a summer tour to give Love time to “recharge.” The announcement affected six weeks of dates, totaling nearly 30 shows, according to Billboard. More cancellations followed, including a planned Oct. 9 performance in Bloomington, Illinois, which was called off three days before it was due to take place.

The Beach Boys also canceled an October 19 concert in Calgary. Before the Cincinnati show, they had played a private performance on October 3 at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach in Dana Point, California. Photos and videos showed Love performing while seated.

Love described some of the health challenges in a message to fans in June. He wrote that recovery from bronchitis followed by Covid, combined with the death of his sister, Maureen, had taken “both an emotional and physical toll” on him. He said he felt physically stronger each day but was heartbroken emotionally.

His public appearance in Cincinnati made the band’s cancellations more immediate for fans: Love was back onstage, but not in the lead-singing role audiences had seen before the tour pause. The group’s other singers took on familiar parts as he sat through the concert.

Stamos says the future is uncertain

On Sunday, Stamos posted an update as he traveled to Nashville for the Beach Boys’ concert at the Ryman Auditorium. He described Love as his “beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor” and said Love was “facing serious health challenges.”

“We hope he’ll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds. We have tonight,” Stamos wrote. He added that doctors, family and friends had urged Love to focus on his health, but Love insisted on performing.

Stamos also said Love drew strength from his band, the audience, friends and drummer. He has performed with the Beach Boys intermittently for 41 years, according to The Guardian.

The Beach Boys’ schedule includes a Nov. 11 performance at Walt Disney World’s Epcot and a Nov. 13 concert at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Bristol, Virginia, Billboard reported. The band is also scheduled to play a show on May 8, 2027, at River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch, Alberta.
