Jean-Luc Mélenchon: Why young French voters see him as a hero

Jean-Luc Mélenchon is drawing support from students protesting across France, with some calling the hard-left leader a “hero” as he seeks to challenge the far right in next year’s presidential election. His appeal among young people is tied to a platform promising sweeping economic and political change, though the available material does not quantify his support among younger voters.

Mélenchon, leader of France Unbowed, has become the strongest contender on the French left, positioning him as a potential challenger to National Rally leader Marine Le Pen. His opponents on the right call him a “radical,” while former allies have described him as a “despot.”

The range of labels reflects a deeply contested figure. For some students joining nationwide protests, however, he represents a force for change.

At a rally in Le Bourget, north of Paris, Mélenchon presented a program calling for the retirement age to fall to 60 and the monthly minimum wage to rise to 1,700 euros, or about $1,900. He also proposed taking France out of NATO and bringing parts of the economy back under state ownership.

His economic agenda includes a proposal to stop repaying France’s debt to the European Central Bank, turning it into a permanent, interest-free loan. Mélenchon says the measure would give the government more room to act.

The proposals offer a clear contrast with the political status quo and help explain why his message has resonated with some young protesters. The material points to visible enthusiasm among students, but does not establish how widely that support extends across Gen Z or the broader electorate.

For the French left, Mélenchon’s position as its leading contender gives him a chance to make a far-reaching platform central to the presidential contest. His bid could also shape the race against Le Pen, although the material does not provide polling or other measures of electoral strength.

At the rally, Mélenchon urged supporters to embrace a sweeping break with existing policy: “Everything must change.”
