Opened firmer at Rp17,982 per US dollar on Friday, helped by S&P’s credit rating decision, even as traders watched Fed comments and Middle East tensions.

JAKARTA — rupiah hari ini opened slightly stronger at Rp17,982 per US dollar on Friday, July 17, 2026, according to Bloomberg data. The local currency gained 4 points, or 0.02 percent, from the previous day’s Rp17,986.

The move gave traders a modest reprieve, but the pressure was not gone. Analysts said the currency was still caught between domestic support from S&P’s credit rating decision and external risks tied to the Federal Reserve and Middle East tensions.

rupiah hari ini gets domestic support

Doo Financial Futures analyst Lukman Leong said sentiment at home remained constructive after S&P’s credit rating action.

“Sentimen domestik sendiri masih cukup positif paska penetapan rating kredit oleh S&P yang masih mendukung rupiah sehingga akan membatasi perlemahan,” he told Suara.com.

That support helped keep rupiah in a narrow range early in the session. Lukman said the currency was likely to trade in the Rp17,900-Rp18,000 area, showing that the market still sees room for movement on both sides.

But the morning strength came with a warning attached. He said rupiah could weaken later in the day if the dollar rebounds, pointing to hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve officials overnight and the still-uncertain situation in the Middle East.

“Eskalasi di Timur Tengah serta sentimen risk off di pasar ekuitas dari aksi jual saham teknologi Range 17900-18000,” he said.

Why traders are watching the US data

Market attention also turned to the United States, where weaker producer prices added to the case for slower inflation. Bisnis.com reported that US Producer Price Index data came in below market expectations, with prices unexpectedly falling in June 2026.

Josua Pardede, chief economist at PermataBank, said the softer reading strengthened the view that inflation pressure in the US is easing. “PPI tercatat lebih rendah dari ekspektasi pasar, sehingga memperkuat keyakinan bahwa tekanan inflasi di AS terus mereda,” he said to ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday.

That matters because a softer inflation profile can give the Federal Reserve more room to loosen policy. For currency markets, that usually means the dollar can lose some of its edge.

Josua added that the data helped improve sentiment across global financial markets and supported most Asian currencies, including rupiah. He also pointed to US retail sales, which rose 0.2 percent month on month in June 2026, slowing from the previous month’s revised 1.0 percent increase and matching expectations.

Still, geopolitics kept a lid on optimism. Reuters-style market pressure remained visible as investors weighed the latest Middle East developments, with tensions adding another layer of caution for regional assets.

Asian currencies move in different directions

Rupiah was not moving alone. Most Asian currencies were weaker in Friday morning trade, with the Malaysian ringgit posting the steepest decline in the region at 0.22 percent. The Thai baht followed with a 0.16 percent drop.

Here is the regional picture from the source data:

CurrencyMove vs US dollar
Malaysian ringgit-0.22 percent
Thai baht-0.16 percent
Taiwan dollar-0.15 percent
Singapore dollar-0.05 percent
Japanese yen-0.05 percent
Chinese yuan-0.04 percent
Hong Kong dollar-0.008 percent
South Korean won+0.12 percent
Philippine peso+0.04 percent

The contrast showed how sensitive Asian markets remain to both US policy signals and geopolitical headlines. For Indonesia, the immediate focus stayed on whether rupiah could defend the morning gain if the dollar strengthens later in the session.

By the source data, the currency’s opening level on July 17 stood at Rp17,982 per US dollar, just 4 points above the previous day’s close.
