A stretch of the M67 in Greater Manchester stayed shut on Tuesday after road workers found suspected human remains beside a bridge near Hyde. The discovery has left one of the area’s main routes closed while police and specialist teams work through the scene.
Discovery made late on Monday
Greater Manchester Police said officers were called shortly after 23:00 BST on Monday, August 3, after road workers came across the remains close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 of the motorway in Tameside. Detectives are now trying to establish exactly what happened.
A force spokesperson said officers were working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind the incident. The motorway was initially closed in both directions between the junctions. By Tuesday morning, the westbound carriageway had reopened, but the eastbound side remained shut.
Major route disruption
National Highways said there was no estimated time for reopening the eastbound carriageway. Drivers were told to plan ahead, allow extra journey time and consider rerouting or delaying travel if possible.
The diversion remains in place via the A627 and the A57. National Highways outlined a route taking traffic off the M67 eastbound at junction 3, then onto the A627 Clark Way southbound, before turning left at the A627/A57 junction onto the A57 Mottram Road eastbound and continuing for just over two miles to the roundabout with the M67 junction 4/A560.
Investigation continues
Police have not said how the suspected remains came to be near the motorway bridge. For now, the road closure is tied directly to the investigation, with officers continuing to work at the site and updates expected as more is established.
The M67 links into Manchester and carries local and commuter traffic through Tameside, so even a short closure can quickly push vehicles onto surrounding roads. With the eastbound lane still blocked and no reopening time given, the disruption is likely to continue until detectives finish their work.
