South Africans will go to the polls on 4 November 2026 for municipal elections after Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa formally proclaimed the date on Friday in Durban. The announcement locks in the country’s local government vote and pushes preparations into their final legal phase.
The elections will decide municipal councils and local leadership structures for the next five-year term. The Electoral Commission of South Africa has already completed voter registration activities, and officials have reminded eligible voters that they must be registered where they live and can only cast a ballot at the station linked to those details.
Legal process now kicks in
The proclamation also triggers key steps under South Africa’s Electoral Act, including the closure of the voters’ roll. That matters. Once the roll closes, the administrative window narrows fast, and the campaign season moves from planning to execution.
Hlabisa made the announcement in Durban, a city that has also become a political stage for South Africa’s wider regional role this month. The country has just taken over the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community’s Standing Committee of Senior Officials, with the handover from Madagascar also taking place in Durban.
Local vote, wider backdrop
South Africa’s election timetable lands against a busy political backdrop at home. In April, President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended national police chief Fannie Masemola after charges tied to a healthcare contract, a move that came as pressure mounted on the government to show it is serious about corruption before local voting begins.
