CENTURION — South Africa’s voters’ roll closes at midnight Friday, and the Electoral Commission has opened candidate nominations as the country moves deeper into the run-up to the 4 November local government elections.
The deadline matters now. Anyone not yet registered, or whose details are wrong, loses the chance to fix it before the election timetable locks in. IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya said eligible South Africans still have “the opportunity to do so until midnight tonight.”
Final call for registration
Moepya made the appeal at a media briefing in Centurion, saying the formal proclamation of election day had started the country’s official election programme. He said the timetable now sets out every step required by law, from this point until results are declared.
“The proclamation provides certainty by formally setting Wednesday, 4 November 2026 as election day,” Moepya said, according to the IEC. He added that it also marks the start of the country’s 89-day election timetable.
The commission has told voters to check their registration details before the roll closes. After midnight, no new registrations or changes to existing details will be processed until after the elections.
That is the sharp edge of the deadline. Miss it, and November is out of reach.
What happens next
Candidate nominations are now open, with submissions to the Electoral Commission set to close on 28 August. That deadline is one of the key dates in the election calendar as parties begin filling their slates for wards and municipalities.
The IEC has also mapped out several other milestones. From 11 August to 18 August, provincial voters’ rolls will be open for inspection. On 14 August, voting station addresses and mobile voting routes will be published. The certified voters’ roll for the 2026 local government elections is due on 26 August.
In practical terms, that means the campaign is shifting from registration to the mechanics of the contest. Parties can no longer focus only on signing up supporters; they now have to finalise candidates, organise campaign teams and prepare for voting logistics across the country.
The deadline also carries a direct cost for would-be voters. If their names are missing, or their registration details are wrong, they will not be able to vote in November. The IEC has framed the final hours as a last chance to use what Moepya called a “golden opportunity.”
The commission’s reminder comes after a busy registration period. The IEC said KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of voter registration transactions during the final registration weekend, while young voters accounted for 26% of all registration activity ahead of the elections.
It also said the final registration weekend produced 1.7 million voter registration transactions, with 291,016 first-time registrations. Another 1.5 million involved voters checking or updating their details. The roll has grown by 2.1 million since the 2024 national elections.
With the midnight deadline approaching, the clock is now on the voters’ roll — and on the parties rushing to meet the 28 August nomination close.
