Tokyo bore the brunt of the Wall Street sell-off on Friday, with the Nikkei 225 sharply lower in morning trade, while Sydney bucked the gloom and the ASX 200 traded higher. The split capped a lopsided week for Asia, where Hong Kong, Mumbai and Jakarta all closed sharply higher on Thursday before US stocks turned lower.

The Nikkei is trading well below its 52-week high of 72,366.34 and far under Thursday's close of 62,188.63, a reminder of how quickly sentiment has turned in the Japanese market.

Wall Street sets the tone

US stocks ended Thursday deeply in the red as AI stocks slid, in what market coverage described as the Nasdaq's biggest one-day drop in 19 months. The Nasdaq fell 5.52% to 24,315.0, the S&P 500 lost 4.36% to 7,353.73 and the Dow Jones dropped 3.44% to 51,523.06. The Russell 2000 of smaller companies fell 4.45%.

The chip names took the heaviest hits. Taiwan Semiconductor lost 10.78% in New York, Marvell Technology fell 10.62% and Lam Research dropped 10.44%. Datadog sank 14.42%. On the other side of the ledger, CDW rose 12.67% and AppLovin gained 10.69%.

The US 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.837% from 4.894%. Canada's S&P/TSX fell 2.03% and Brazil's Bovespa lost 0.82%.

Rest of Asia: Thursday's gains, Friday's open

Most Asian benchmarks closed higher on Thursday, before the US decline. The Hang Seng rose 3.67% to 24,796.98, led by NetEase, up 9.07%, and Li Auto, up 8.94%, while Lenovo fell 6.86%. India's Sensex climbed 3.11% to 79,310.01. Singapore's Straits Times Index added 0.52% to 5,296.25, and the Shanghai Composite was nearly flat, up 0.1% at 3,689.91.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 and DAX each slipped 0.43%, the Euro STOXX 50 lost 0.55% and the CAC 40 rose 0.34%.

Jakarta rallies ahead of Friday's open

Indonesia's IHSG jumped 2.57% on Thursday to close at 5,030.261, and the LQ45 gained 2.48% to 513.645. The advance came off a base that matters: the previous close of 4,904.29 is the index's 52-week low, and the IHSG remains 18.77% lower over one month and 41.83% lower year to date, well under its 52-week high of 9,134.70.

Mining names led the board. Merdeka Copper Gold rose 15.76% to 2,130, Archi Indonesia gained 12.07% and Amman Mineral Internasional added 8.28%. Nickel was in focus as well: nickel climbed to a five-week high on an Indonesian crackdown, while copper futures fell 2.45% to $6.246 a pound. Barito Pacific led decliners, down 6.67%, followed by Mitratel, down 3.89%.

The Jakarta bourse opens at 09:00 WIB, with the rupiah slightly weaker against the dollar.

Oil, gold and currencies

Oil extended its climb, with both Brent and WTI higher in Asian trade. Gold edged lower and silver fell 0.74% to $51.99.

Major currencies were little changed in early Asian trade, and Bitcoin and Ether were steady after a steep fall in the prior session. The Nasdaq is now more than 10% below its record, nearing correction territory.

What to watch

Jakarta's open is the next test of whether Thursday's rebound from the 52-week low can hold, with mining shares and the rupiah in focus. Tokyo's afternoon session will show whether the Nikkei's slide deepens or steadies.

In the United States, Charter Communications is due to report before the open on Friday. Next week, Constellation Energy, The Trade Desk and Take-Two Interactive report on November 9, followed by Applied Materials and Cisco on November 12, with chipmakers and AI-linked stocks under close watch after Thursday's rout.
