YouTube is rolling out a redesigned mobile app that removes Subscriptions from the bottom navigation bar, prompting complaints from users accustomed to reaching their feeds with a single tap. The update is appearing on Android and iOS, though the rollout is not described as complete.

The app’s familiar five-button bar is giving way to a layout that puts more emphasis on Shorts and content creation. A redesigned Home page combines recommendations with access to subscriptions and other content. To reach the Subscriptions feed, users now swipe through a header at the top of the screen rather than tap a dedicated bottom-bar tab.

A familiar shortcut is gone

The change is functional, but it alters a routine many users had built over nearly a decade. The Subscriptions feed remains accessible; what has disappeared is its persistent place in the main navigation. That shift also gives Shorts and upload tools greater prominence in the interface.

Some users are calling the new layout “sloppy” and “disgusting,” while others have described it as Google’s worst interface design. Much of the criticism centers on the loss of the tab and the feeling that the app is steering people toward content selected by YouTube rather than making their chosen subscriptions easy to reach.

That frustration reflects a broader change in how the app presents content. YouTube has been reorganizing its mobile experience around Shorts and algorithmic discovery, including changes to the homepage. The latest redesign puts that direction directly into the navigation users rely on to move around the app.

Rolling out across phones

The redesign has appeared for Android users and is also showing up on many iPhones. YouTube appears to be enabling it through a server-side rollout, rather than requiring a specific app update. That means users may see the new layout at different times.

For affected Android users, launcher shortcuts can provide a direct route to the Subscriptions feed. But the redesign itself offers no dedicated bottom-bar tab to restore in the layout described. The complaints are arriving as the rollout continues, with the navigation change marking YouTube’s biggest mobile-app overhaul in about a decade.
