APPLE — Telegram was restored to Apple’s App Store on Monday after briefly disappearing from iPhone and iPad downloads over content Apple said violated its rules on child sexual abuse material. The messaging app was available again the same day, after Apple said Telegram removed the content and banned the user who posted it.
The short removal mattered because it temporarily blocked new users from downloading one of the world’s biggest messaging platforms. Existing users could keep using Telegram during the takedown, but the move put fresh pressure on the company and its moderation systems.
Apple said it found guideline violations
Apple said the app had been taken down after a review found “content that violates our strict guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse material.” The company added that Telegram was restored after the platform “promptly removed the content and banned the user who posted it.”
Telegram responded in an emailed statement shared with Forbes, saying: “Apple reported one user sharing CSAM that was immediately banned. Telegram has removed more than 337,900 groups and channels related to CSAM in 2026.”
In a post on X, Telegram also took a swipe at Apple’s handling of the episode, tagging the company and writing: “I’m sure this stance will be applied equally to all other apps in the store, in the future right?” Telegram’s official X account later posted: “Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated,” followed by an apple emoji.
A wider dispute over Telegram’s reach
The episode landed at a sensitive moment for Telegram. The platform and its founder, Pavel Durov, have faced growing scrutiny in multiple countries. Forbes reported that Durov was recently accused by Russia of aiding terrorism, while Australia alleged the platform failed to block violent content.
Yahoo reported that Durov was arrested in France in 2024 for failing to prevent misuse of the messaging service, and was recently added to Russia’s list of terrorists and extremists. The same report said Telegram has more than 1 billion users worldwide, underscoring how widely any App Store disruption can ripple.
That reach is the real issue. When Apple pulls Telegram, even briefly, the impact goes beyond one app listing. New users cannot download it, rival platforms get a short opening, and the company’s content policies come under another public review. For a service that moves politics, news, and private chats across borders, a one-day takedown is still enough to raise questions about moderation and platform control.
Telegram has said on its safety overview page that it removed 29,640 CSAM-related items in 2025 after reports from NGOs including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Its statement to Forbes said the company removed more than 337,900 groups and channels related to CSAM in 2026.
The app was restored, but the dispute did not end there. Apple’s removal and Telegram’s response now sit alongside the platform’s wider legal and regulatory fights, with scrutiny likely to remain intense the next time a review turns up content Apple says crosses the line.
