Apple plans to shake up its traditional smartphone launch calendar by splitting the upcoming iPhone 18 release date across late 2026 and early 2027. The California-based technology giant is preparing to segment its launch, prioritizing its premium and novel devices for the traditional autumn window while delaying standard models to the following spring.
According to reports from Nikkei, Apple plans to launch at least five new iPhone models between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027. This strategy marks a significant departure from the unified September launch schedule the company has relied on for over a decade. The staggered rollout means consumers looking to upgrade will face different waiting times depending on which tier of device they want to purchase.
Expected Autumn Launch and Keynote Dates
Apple kicked off its software cycle at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 8, releasing the first developer beta of iOS 27. This timeline matches previous release patterns, setting up the hardware launch schedule for September. The special keynote event is tentatively projected for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, to avoid the US Labor Day holiday.
Following this timeline, pre-orders are expected to begin on Friday, September 11, 2026. The general release of iOS 27 is anticipated for September 14 or 15, with the official iPhone 18 release date for the premium models slated for Friday, September 18, 2026. This initial wave will focus on the high-end iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The Foldable iPhone Ultra
Alongside the premium pro models, Apple is ramping up production for its first-ever foldable handset, potentially named the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold. Nikkei reports that Apple has instructed its suppliers to prepare for the production of 10 million foldable units this year, an upward revision from earlier forecasts. While the foldable phone will likely be unveiled during the September keynote, its actual commercial release may lag behind. Industry analysts suggest that Apple might announce the device but ship it several weeks later due to complex production hurdles associated with foldable display technology.
Standard Models Pushed to Spring 2027
In a major shift, consumers looking for the base models will have to wait longer. The standard iPhone 18, the budget-friendly iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air 2 are reportedly being pushed to a spring 2027 release window. This delay comes amid concerns over memory component shortages and high global RAM prices, which are heavily impacting Apple's manufacturing supply chain and pricing structures.
