BARCELONA — Ronald Araújo is close to joining Liverpool on a season-long loan from Barcelona, according to reports from BBC Sport, MARCA transfer expert Matteo Moretto and Fabrizio Romano. The move for the Uruguay defender would cover the 2026/2027 season and includes an option to buy.
The deal matters on both sides of the transfer market. Liverpool are looking to strengthen their defence after Ibrahima Konate left for Real Madrid on a free transfer, while Barcelona appear ready to move on from a player who has slipped down their pecking order at Spotify Camp Nou.
Ronald Araújo and the Barcelona shake-up
BBC Sport reported that Araújo is expected to link up with the Liverpool squad this weekend. The 27-year-old centre-back remains under contract with Barcelona until 2031, but he only made 11 league starts last season.
Barcelona ended last season with Araújo as club captain, but the club’s central defence has changed around him. Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi emerged as the preferred pairing, while Jules Kounde remained the first-choice option at right-back. That left Araújo with fewer opportunities in the position where he has built much of his reputation.
Fabrizio Romano described the agreement on X as: “Liverpool agree loan deal to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, HERE WE GO!” He added: “Verbal agreement club to club with Barça now approved by director Deco. New centre back for LFC (Liverpool FC) with a surprise bomba.”
Moretto confirmed the move after Romano’s update, saying the exclusive landed at around 23:30 local time in Catalonia. Liverpool’s interest had also come after previous links between Araújo and Bayern Munich, with reports at the time pointing to an €80 million bid.
Why Liverpool moved now
Liverpool’s timing is tied to their need at centre-back. Konate’s free transfer to Real Madrid left a gap, and the club have moved quickly to secure an experienced defender who has already played at the top level for years.
Araújo debuted for Barcelona’s first team in 2019 after arriving from Boston River in Uruguay. Since then, he has made more than 200 appearances for the Spanish club and helped them win La Liga in three of the past four seasons.
For Liverpool, the loan gives them immediate cover without a permanent outlay up front. For Barcelona, it clears room in a defensive line that has already shifted around Cubarsi, Martin and Kounde. The option to buy keeps the door open beyond one season, though details of that clause were not immediately available in the reports.
The 27-year-old now looks set for another major step in his career. If the move goes through as reported, Liverpool will add a defender who has captained Barcelona and has spent much of the last decade as one of the club’s most trusted names at the back.
That is the immediate test for both clubs: Liverpool get the defensive reinforcement they wanted, and Barcelona lose a player who has been part of more than 200 matches in their shirt.
