Six people were killed and 20 others injured early Wednesday when a private travel bus collided with a lorry on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway in India’s Suryapet district, police said. The crash happened around 5 a.m. at Dorakunta, where the truck had come to a stop after an earlier collision with the road divider.
Five of the dead were women. The bus, travelling behind the lorry, hit its rear at high speed, crushing part of the vehicle and trapping passengers inside. Several injured travellers were heard calling for help. Some managed to jump out. Others could not.
How the collision unfolded
According to Suryapet police, the lorry was carrying metal poles and was moving from Suryapet towards Vijayawada. The driver tried to overtake a bus, struck the divider at speed and ended up with part of the vehicle resting on the median and part on the road.
Minutes later, the private bus driver did not notice the stranded truck in time and hit its rear side. The right side of the bus took the worst impact. Hard hit. The front of the lorry, and the rear of the bus, bore the force of the crash.
Onlookers and passersby alerted police, who rushed to the spot. The impact left a section of the bus crushed, with passengers trapped in the wreckage. Rescue efforts began at once, though the source material does not say how many were pulled out by emergency teams.
