JAKARTA — LRT Velodrome-Manggarai Set for August 2026 Inauguration after Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the city aims to open the line in August next year. The target matters for commuters in East Jakarta and the capital’s crowded transit core, where transfer delays can quickly ripple through the daily commute.

The Jakarta Provincial Government has placed the 11-station project at Rp12.5 trillion and wants it finished as part of Phase 1B of the city’s LRT network. Pramono delivered the update on Sunday, June 21, during the groundbreaking for the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck in Central Jakarta.

LRT Velodrome-Manggarai moves toward completion

Pramono said the administration wants the Velodrome-to-Manggarai segment completed as soon as possible. “The Jakarta government has decided that the LRT from Velodrome to Manggarai will hopefully be inaugurated this August. The investment totals Rp12.5 trillion, with 11 station points, and we will connect it all the way to Dukuh Atas,” he said.

The line is more than a new rail corridor. It is a link between neighborhoods that send large numbers of daily passengers toward central Jakarta and one of the city’s most important interchange points, Manggarai. When that connection works well, trips become shorter, transfers get simpler, and reliance on private vehicles can ease a little.

That is the promise. The work behind it is less tidy. Track construction, signaling, power systems, communications, and operations all have to line up before trains can carry passengers safely and regularly.

Pramono’s August 2026 target also gives the project a public deadline. Residents now have a clearer timeline for a rail line that has been discussed as part of Jakarta’s broader push to stitch together buses, trains, and urban rail into one network that feels connected rather than fragmented.

Dukuh Atas is planned as a six-mode hub

The governor also said the line will not stop at Manggarai in the long run. The administration is preparing a further connection to Dukuh Atas, which he described as a hub for six modes of transport.

Those modes are MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, LRT Jabodebek, the Airport Rail Link, TransJakarta, and KRL Commuter Line. “So Dukuh Atas will have MRT, LRT, both the one run by the Jakarta government and the central government, then the Airport Rail Link, then TransJakarta, KCI (KRL). So there will be six,” Pramono said.

For Jakarta, that kind of interchange can shape how people move through the city. A smooth transfer does not sound dramatic. But in practice, it decides whether a commuter reaches the office on time, whether a student makes a class, and whether a worker chooses public transport the next day.

Dukuh Atas already sees heavy foot traffic at rush hour. If the physical links are built properly, the area could work more like a true mobility hub and less like a crowded meeting point where passengers have to guess their way between services.

Testing is now the key hurdle

Before any inauguration can happen, the technical work still has to pass tests. PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk and PT Jakarta Propertindo, or Jakpro, have already started testing and commissioning for Jakarta LRT Phase 1B.

One of the early stages included testing the 3.6-kilometer track connecting Velodrome Station and Pramuka Station. That step matters because a rail line is not ready just because the concrete and steel are in place. The system has to behave as one unit.

Jakpro President Director Iwan Takwin said the process is being handled carefully so the systems are ready before commercial service begins. “Every meter of the elevated track of Jakarta LRT Phase 1B is our responsibility to the people of DKI Jakarta who will rely on the LRT every day. That is why this T&C stage must be prepared very carefully,” he said in a written statement.

The tests cover the track, signaling, electricity, communications, and inter-system integration. These checks are usually invisible to the public, but they are where operational reliability is decided. If one part is out of sync, delays and safety problems can follow.

That is why the August 2026 target is tight. The province and project managers now have to keep construction moving while making sure the system is ready for daily use, not just photo opportunities.

For Jakarta residents, the biggest impact will come from the commute itself. Better rail connections can cut waiting time, improve transfer comfort, and give workers and students another way into the city center. The Rp12.5 trillion budget shows the scale of the bet: Jakarta wants a network that can absorb more trips without forcing everyone onto the same crowded roads.

Pramono said the payoff should be clearer, cleaner movement across the capital. The next public checkpoint is simple. August 2026 will show whether the city can turn that timetable into a working railway.
