JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – The Tasua and Asyura fasting schedule for 1448 Hijri falls in late June 2026, with two different dates between Kemenag/Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama. The gap comes from the method each organization uses to determine the start of Muharram.

For Muslims who want to seek the virtue of wiping away a yearโ€™s sins, choosing one schedule and observing it is enough. The key is knowing the exact date.

Tasua and Asyura Fasting Schedule from the Ministry and Muhammadiyah

Based on the 2026 Indonesian Hijri Calendar published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 1 Muharram 1448 H falls on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. From that point, the sunnah fasting dates are as follows:

Fasting Day Hijri Date Gregorian Date
Tasua 9 Muharram 1448 H Wednesday, June 24, 2026
Asyura 10 Muharram 1448 H Thursday, June 25, 2026

The Global Single Hijri Calendar (KHGT) used by Muhammadiyah shows the same dates as the Ministryโ€™s version this year.

NU Version: One-Day Difference

The Falakiyah Institute of PBNU set the start of Muharram 1448 H one day later. As a result, the sunnah fasting dates in the NU calendar also shift:

Fasting Day Hijri Date Gregorian Date (NU)
Tasua 9 Muharram 1448 H Thursday, June 25, 2026
Asyura 10 Muharram 1448 H Friday, June 26, 2026

A one-day gap between the two versions is nothing new. Every year, differences in rukyat and hisab methods can produce dates that do not always match. “This difference in schedule is a normal part of determining the Hijri calendar. Muslims may observe worship according to the rulings of the organization they follow,” is a position often conveyed by religious authorities.

Virtues of Asyura and Tasua Fasting

Asyura fasting carries a special place. The Prophet Muhammad said: “Fasting on the day of Asyura, I hope from Allah that it will expiate the sins of the previous year.” (HR Muslim). That is not a small promise, but one day of fasting with the reward of erasing sins for twelve months.

As for Tasua, the Prophet recommended it for a specific reason. When he arrived in Medina and found the ุงู„ูŠู‡ูˆุฏ fasting on the 10th of Muharram, he instructed Muslims to fast as well and add one day, the 9th, to be different. Tasua is therefore not just a complement, but a marker of identity.

The two fasts are observed in order: the 9th and then the 10th of Muharram. If you can only manage one day, fasting on Asyura alone is still valid and still brings its virtue.

Intention for Tasua and Asyura Fasting

The intention is recited in the heart at night, before dawn. The wording is:

Intention for Tasua fasting (9 Muharram):
ู†ูŽูˆูŽูŠู’ุชู ุตูŽูˆู’ู…ูŽ ุบูŽุฏู ุนูŽู†ู’ ุฃูŽุฏูŽุงุกู ุณูู†ูŽู‘ุฉู ุงู„ุชูŽู‘ุงุณููˆุนูŽุงุกู ู„ูู„ู‡ู ุชูŽุนูŽุงู„ูŽู‰
Nawaitu shauma ghadin ‘an ada’i sunnatit Tasu’a lillahi ta’ala
“I intend to fast the sunnah of Tasua tomorrow for Allah the Almighty.”

Intention for Asyura fasting (10 Muharram):
ู†ูŽูˆูŽูŠู’ุชู ุตูŽูˆู’ู…ูŽ ุบูŽุฏู ุนูŽู†ู’ ุฃูŽุฏูŽุงุกู ุณูู†ูŽู‘ุฉู ุนูŽุงุดููˆุฑูŽุงุกูŽ ู„ูู„ู‡ู ุชูŽุนูŽุงู„ูŽู‰
Nawaitu shauma ghadin ‘an ada’i sunnati ‘Asyura lillahi ta’ala
“I intend to fast the sunnah of Asyura tomorrow for Allah the Almighty.”

The practice is the same as Ramadan fasting: refrain from eating, drinking, and anything that breaks the fast from dawn until sunset.

Muharram: A Sacred Month

Muharram is not an ordinary month. It is counted among the four sacred months, along with Dzulqa’dah, Dzulhijjah, and Rajab, which Allah has specially honored in the Quran. In this month, sins are weighed more heavily and rewards for worship are multiplied.

Muslims are encouraged to increase repentance, charity, and avoid wrongdoing throughout the month. The arrival of 1 Muharram is also often used as a moment for reflection: reviewing worship from the past year and setting new targets.

Practical Notes

A few things to keep in mind:

Schedule choice: Follow the ruling of the organization or religious body you normally refer to. There is no need to be confusedโ€”both are valid in fiqh.

Women in menstruation or postnatal bleeding are not required to fast; they may make up the fast later after becoming pure, even though this is a sunnah fast rather than an obligation. Making it up is still encouraged so the virtue is not missed.

Monday-Thursday fasting: For those who regularly fast on Mondays and Thursdays, this yearโ€™s Asyura fast happens to fall on Thursday in the Ministry version and Friday in the NU version. It can be intended as both the weekly sunnah and Asyura.

Most importantly: do not let a one-day schedule difference lead to no fasting at all.

Quick summary: The 2026 Asyura fast falls on June 25 (Kemenag/Muhammadiyah) or June 26 (NU). Tasua is the day before. Its virtue: expiation of minor sins for one year (HR Muslim). The intention is read at night. Respect the difference, choose one, and carry it out.
