Jabodetabek Weather Alert: Thunderstorms, Extreme UV Through June 26
Jabodetabek weather alert for June 22-26 warns of afternoon thunderstorms and extreme midday UV levels.
JAKARTA — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known in Indonesia as BMKG, has warned that Jabodetabek will face afternoon-to-evening rain, lightning, and strong winds from Sunday, June 22, to Thursday, June 26, 2026. The warning matters for millions of people moving across the Jakarta metro area, where a short burst of convective rain can quickly turn roads slick and trap commuters in traffic.
BMKG said the weather pattern is driven by unstable air over the region, strong daytime heating, and moist winds from the Java Sea. That combination can trigger cumulonimbus clouds fast. In practical terms, mornings may look calm. Then the sky can change within minutes.
Five days of unstable afternoon weather
BMKG’s analysis on Monday, June 22 at 07:00 a.m. WIB showed the atmosphere over Jabodetabek was primed for convective rain. The agency expects partly cloudy mornings, hot afternoons with temperatures reaching 32–33°C, and light to moderate rain from late afternoon into evening in most areas.
The thunderstorm chance runs between 40 and 62 percent each day. Temperatures will generally stay in the 24–33°C range, while humidity remains high at 75 to 93 percent. Winds are forecast to blow from the northeast to southeast at 5–30 km/h.
That mix is a familiar recipe for fast-forming rain clouds. Daytime heat lifts air upward. Moisture feeds the clouds. Then rain drops hard and fast.
What the forecast means by area
In Jakarta, Sunday starts with partly cloudy skies. Light rain is expected first in East Jakarta and South Jakarta in the afternoon, then the rain spreads to other parts of the capital at night, with a 34–42 percent chance.
On June 23, thick clouds are expected from morning, followed by moderate rain across all parts of Jakarta from afternoon into evening. BMKG said a similar pattern should continue through June 26.
Bogor and Depok, which sit at higher elevation than central Jakarta, are forecast to stay cooler at 20–32°C. Local rain may begin in the afternoon and spread to Depok City and Bogor Regency at night. Terrain helps clouds build faster there, which can make rain more intense than in the capital.
Tangerang began the morning hazy, with an Air Quality Index of 157, a level classified as unhealthy. Temperatures had already reached 32°C. Rain is expected to begin around 2:00 p.m. WIB, with a 43–62 percent chance. Bekasi follows a similar pattern: clear in the morning, then light to moderate rain from late afternoon.
Why commuters should pay attention
The risk is not just wet roads. Puddles are a real concern in flood-prone parts of North Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Bekasi, and Tangerang City. If rain overlaps with the evening commute between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. WIB, congestion can build fast on major roads and feeder routes.
Bogor, Depok, and South Jakarta need extra caution because many streets are lined with trees. When strong winds arrive with rain, branches can fall and block lanes. Air travelers may also see delays at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma if thunderstorms intensify.
This is the part that affects daily life most. School runs, office departures, delivery schedules, and ride-hailing trips can all take a hit if the afternoon cloudburst lands on top of peak traffic. A 20-minute storm can ripple through the rest of the evening.
Extreme UV already adding pressure
BMKG also flagged very high to extreme ultraviolet exposure in Jabodetabek on Monday morning, with UV index levels at 9–10. That means outdoor exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. WIB can cause sunburn quickly, especially for people waiting for transport, working outside, or spending long stretches on the road.
The agency advised residents to use SPF 30 or higher, wear a hat and sunglasses, and avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest hours. The sun risk is easy to ignore when the sky looks hazy or cloudy, but BMKG said the index remains dangerous even before rain develops.
For a region packed with commuters, construction workers, street vendors, and students, that warning carries real weight. Heat stress in the morning, then thunderstorms by afternoon. It leaves very little room for a comfortable day outside.
BMKG urges frequent checks
BMKG told the public not to shelter under trees or billboards during lightning and to keep an eye on puddles in flood-prone areas. The agency also said convective weather can change within minutes, so travelers should check the latest forecast before leaving home.
Weather updates are issued every six hours through the InfoBMKG app, the weather.bmkg.go.id website, the @infobmkg X account, and the 196 hotline.
“People in Jabodetabek should stay alert from midday onward,” a BMKG official said in the agency’s advisory, noting that the region’s atmosphere can shift quickly once surface heating peaks.
