Pramono Says Jakarta Has ASEAN’s No. 2 Public Transport System
Pramono says Jakarta’s public transport system ranks No. 2 in ASEAN, with six transit modes set to connect in Dukuh Atas.
JAKARTA — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the capital now has ASEAN’s second-best public transport system, behind Singapore, as the city pushes ahead with a major integration project in Dukuh Atas, Central Jakarta.
The ranking matters for millions of commuters who spend hours each week moving across the capital. Pramono said the city also placed eighth in Asia and 17th globally for urban mobility, a sign that years of investment in trains, buses, and interchange points are beginning to show up in regional and international assessments.
“For the record, Jakarta is now the number two city for public transport in ASEAN after Singapore. Eighth in Asia, 17th in the world,” Pramono said while inaugurating the Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck project.
Why the ranking matters for commuters
The governor’s announcement lands at a time when transport quality has become a daily issue, not just a policy target. Faster connections can mean shorter travel times, lower monthly commuting costs, and fewer people choosing private cars or motorcycles for every trip.
That shift is important for Jakarta, where traffic has long shaped how people work, study, and move around the city. A stronger mass transit network also helps businesses by making central districts easier to reach and reducing the friction of daily travel.
Pramono framed the result as proof that Jakarta’s transport reforms are no longer just plans on paper. The city now wants to turn that progress into something passengers can feel in real time, especially at one of its busiest transfer points.
Six transit modes to meet in Dukuh Atas
The Dukuh Atas pedestrian deck is designed to make transfers smoother in a district already packed with mobility options. The city originally planned to connect four transport modes, but Pramono said the final design will link six.
Those six are MRT Jakarta, LRT Jabodebek, LRT Jakarta, KRL Commuter Line, Transjakarta, and the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Rail Link. The idea is to reduce the familiar headache of switching systems across sidewalks, traffic, and weather-exposed paths.
“Earlier, the MRT president director said four modes would be connected. In fact, it is not just four, but six modes that will be connected,” Pramono said.
The project also reflects a problem Jakarta has tried to fix for years: the lack of seamless coordination among operators. By building a shared hub, the city hopes passengers think less about which agency runs which service and more about whether the trip is smooth.
What the change means for residents
For ordinary users, the practical benefit is simple. Walking between modes should get easier, safer, and less exposed to heat or rain. That matters in a city where a bad transfer can ruin an otherwise efficient commute.
Pramono said the new pedestrian facility is meant to create “seamless mobility,” with covered access that protects riders from Jakarta’s weather swings. He argued that comfort is a key reason middle- and upper-income residents often hesitate to leave private vehicles behind.
The wider ambition goes beyond transfers. Jakarta is also preparing Dukuh Atas to serve as an immigration and check-in point for passengers heading to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. If that plan moves ahead, travelers could handle part of their airport process in the city center before boarding the airport rail link.
“I will ask the Jakarta regional apparatus organizations to make this place also serve as an immigration and check-in point. That way, I am sure the airport train will operate more easily and be integrated as a whole,” Pramono said.
He said the upgrade could help lift Airport Rail Link usage, which he described as still below its potential because access has not been fully convenient. The city now wants Dukuh Atas to function less like a stopover and more like a working mobility hub, with the next phase depending on how quickly those service plans can be executed.
