JAKARTA — Pro Jurnalis Media Siber (PJS) will hold its third National Congress from July 21-24, 2026, in Jakarta, and the group says its main target is clear: win recognition as a Dewan Pers constituent. The congress, known as Munas III PJS 2026 Sets Path Toward Dewan Pers Recognition, comes as Indonesia’s digital media sector faces intense pressure from disinformation and fierce online competition.
The congress carries the theme “Integrity in the Press, Dignified Nation, Strong Democracy.” For PJS, the gathering is more than an internal meeting. It is a test of how far the organization has matured and whether it can convince the press regulator that it deserves formal standing in the country’s media ecosystem.
Why the Jakarta congress matters
PJS has expanded quickly in recent years. Provincial, regency, and city leadership structures have been formed across the country, while the organization has also pushed journalism training, ethics education, and efforts to improve members’ professional capacity.
That growth matters because Dewan Pers recognition can change how a press organization is seen inside Indonesia. Dewan Pers, or the Press Council, is the national body that helps regulate and protect the press, and constituent status gives a group stronger legitimacy in that system.
Rikky Fermana, head of the PJS Bangka Belitung provincial board, called Munas III a historic moment for the organization. He said the national congress could become a turning point if PJS succeeds in moving closer to constituent status.
“The Third National Congress is a historic moment for the entire PJS family. Becoming a Dewan Pers constituent will be an important milestone in strengthening the existence of professional and integrity-based cyber media,” Rikky said on Monday, June 22, 2026.
Pressure on Indonesia’s cyber journalism
Rikky said the push for Dewan Pers recognition is not just a central board agenda. Members across the country want it too. The timing reflects a rougher media climate, where digital platforms have accelerated news distribution while also opening the door wider for hoaxes and low-quality content.
That is the real pressure point. For readers, it affects what appears on phones, timelines, and messaging apps every day. If cyber media outlets cut corners, the public can be flooded with false or sloppy information. If professional standards rise, audiences get reporting that is more accountable, more accurate, and easier to trust.
Rikky said the press still holds a strategic role as a pillar of democracy. He argued that a strong, professional, and integrity-driven press organization is needed so the public receives information that is true, accurate, and accountable.
He added that Dewan Pers recognition would mean more than paperwork. In his view, it would strengthen PJS’s position in helping produce journalists who are competent, independent, and responsible, even as commercial and political pressure continues to shape newsroom life.
Solidarity inside the regions
Before the congress opens, Rikky has asked PJS members in Bangka Belitung to stay united. He said regional solidarity is the base of organizational strength at the national level. Without that, the push for wider legitimacy would lose momentum.
PJS has framed the effort as a shared struggle to protect the dignity of journalism, improve the quality of cyber media, and reinforce the press as a healthy part of democracy. The organization says its network already reaches provinces and local districts, giving it a broader base as it heads into the Jakarta forum.
“This is a shared struggle to realize an integrity-based press, a dignified nation, and a stronger democracy,” Rikky said.
PJS expects the July congress to open a new chapter for the group. With its nationwide structure already in place and training programs running among members, the organization is now pressing for the next step: a stronger formal position in front of Dewan Pers.
